Song for the Rough Week Ahead…
Joe Strummer, Mick Jones, Paul Simonon and Topper Headon were THE CLASH. Their motto was ‘the only band that matters’ and for a period of time in the late 70’s and early 80’s they lived up to that heady slogan. They rocked as they made you think. They introduced millions to reggae, ska and dub music. They recorded the classic double album ‘London Calling‘ which still sounds fresh today with its different styles and perfect song sequence.
The band imploded into drug abuse and internal personality conflicts that made the last gasps of the band a little hard to take. Sadly with the death of Joe Strummer in 2002 at the age of 50 the history book closed on one of the greatest bands in rock and roll…ever.
Let us kick this week with one of their most powerful songs…Death or Glory.
Now every cheap hood strikes a bargain with the world,
Ends up making payments on a sofa or a girl.
Love ‘n hate tattooed across the knuckles of his hands,
Hands that slap his kids around, ’cause they don’t understand how,
Death or glory, becomes just another story.
Death or glory, becomes just another story.
